This course will educate physical therapists and physical therapist assistants regarding the examination and treatment of patients who participate in running and have running-related injuries. Specific details will be provided regarding running considerations, running mechanics, and foot strike patterns. A runner’s evaluation will be presented with a discussion of treatment interventions, including manual techniques. Running video analysis will be discussed in detail, along with running videos. The goal is for the participants to gain new information about running factors, running-related injuries, and the importance of a detailed runner’s history. The intent is for attendees to be able to implement a runners’ rehab program and increase their proficiency in treating runners.
4 Credit Hours for $65

The participants will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the importance of a detailed runner’s history and knowledge of various running considerations.
  2. Recognize the differences between the 3 different foot strike patterns and the effect of foot strike patterns on running mechanics and running-related injuries (RRIs).
  3. Appreciate the difference between treating novice vs. experienced runners.
  4. Recognize the importance of a running specific evaluation and understand the parameters to assess for each patient.
  5. Design an appropriate treatment program for a patient who has an RRI.

About the Instructor Megan Advani, PT, DPT, MPT, CMP

Megan earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from East Carolina University in 1999 and her post-professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, SHRP in 2006. Megan has worked as a clinician in outpatient orthopedics for the past 23 years.  She has been an Outpatient Rehab Manager for the past 7 years.  Megan previously worked as an adjunct faculty lab instructor at UMDNJ-Newark for the Musculoskeletal PT classes.  Megan has extensive experience in treating runners, dancers, and patients with foot/ankle injuries. She started a runner’s rehab program in 2018, which includes the evaluation and treatment of patients with running-related injuries as well as gait/running video analysis.
