This course will provide education for physical therapists and physical therapist assistants regarding the examination and treatment of patients with foot/ankle injuries. Specific details will be provided regarding the assessment of the Subtalar, Midtarsal, and Talocrural joints. Treatment interventions will be presented, including manual techniques. There will be multiple lab sessions to practice manual assessment and treatment techniques. The goal is for the participants to gain new information for their foot/ankle practice and understand how to utilize new techniques and a more detailed approach to foot/ankle assessment and treatment.

The participants will be able to:

  1. Appreciate the importance of assessing the Midtarsal and Subtalar joints.
  2. Identify subtalar neutral and its importance in foot/ankle assessment and goniometric measurements.
  3. Identify the role of the Midtarsal joint and the method to properly assess Midtarsal joint mobility for a patient with a foot/ankle injury.
  4. Identify forefoot equinus and understand its effect on foot function.
  5. Design an appropriate treatment program for a patient with a foot/ankle injury and select appropriate manual techniques.
  6. Demonstrate subtalar, tibiofibular, and midtarsal taping techniques, including the navicular sling and subtalar joint inversion/eversion.
  7. Demonstrate manual techniques and therapeutic exercises for patients with foot/ankle diagnoses and injuries.

Format

Eight (8) hours of instruction (lecture/lab); two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break.

About the Instructor Megan Advani, PT, DPT, MPT, CMP

Megan earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from East Carolina University in 1999 and her post-professional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, SHRP in 2006. Megan has worked as a clinician in outpatient orthopedics for the past 23 years.  She has been an Outpatient Rehab Manager for the past 7 years.  Megan previously worked as an adjunct faculty lab instructor at UMDNJ-Newark for the Musculoskeletal PT classes.  Megan has extensive experience in treating runners, dancers, and patients with foot/ankle injuries. She started a runner’s rehab program in 2018, which includes the evaluation and treatment of patients with running-related injuries as well as gait/running video analysis.
